On 20 August 1937, their marriage was blessed with the birth of their first child.  Richard Frederick Flatt was born in Waco, Texas at Ola Mae’s parents’ home.  

In October 1937, Ola Mae returned to California with Richard and resumes the life of a sailor’s wife, with all its attendant difficulties.  

In June 1938, Mae is pregnant again and returns to Waco.  Roy returns to living in the “shack” on Navy Field.
