Civilian Life
Having completed his four year tour, and married with a family, Roy chose to return to civilian life. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on 10/20/38. When he was discharged he was making $58.00 a month pay.
Roy returns to Waco, and with Mae and Richard and sets up life at a rental house just down the street from her parents’ home. They later moved to a rental house on the next street. He got his first Social Security Card on 29 October 38.
They purchased a gas range and a 4 piece bedroom suite for $100.48, being very diligent in paying off this loan and all future ones in their married life.
Roy went to work for a local lumber mill as a mill worker in cabinetry. He eventually made $225 a month while working at William Cameron Mills.
On 18 May 1940 they bought their first car, a 1937 Ford Sedan. That car was later replaced with a 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe 2 door Sedan.
