Mae

One of the jobs Roy had as a young man was as a delivery boy for Western Union delivering telegrams. During this time, while delivering a telegram, he met Miss Ola Mae Jones. She was the daughter of Jesse Bowman and Lillie Iola Jones of Waco, Texas.

While in port and granted liberty for any length of time, he would try to find a way to get to Waco and be with the new love of his life—Ola Mae Jones.  The letters between them had developed into a serious relationship.

He hitchhiked one time with a couple from Nebraska, Joe and Thelma Burney.  He got their address and wrote them later, thanking them again for the ride. They were impressed with the bearing of this young man and became lifelong friends after that.

After a somewhat off and on again long distance love affair, they decided to tie the knot. They were married 19 February 1936 in Waco, Texas.  They were both 18 at the time.
